TECHNIQUES

Centered content with background patterns

A technique we have used extensively is to place the linear content of a web page centered in the screen, surrounded by semi-abstract patterns and pictures. While certainly not limited to this format, we find it effective at engaging a person's whole brain.
The text involves the linear thinking mind, and the images and patterns appeal to the aesthetic non-linear mind. This combination helps retain a viewer's interest, like the way music can compliment and enhance the spoken word.

Rounded corners

The central content of a web page can be surrounded by a border to contrast it with the background. The border looks better when the corners are rounded off. We use transparent GIFs for the rounded corners.

Mirroring and blending

To create repeating background patterns, there are two techniques we use. One is to mirror an image 2 or 4 ways; the background on this page is a 4-way mirror of a section of a photo of some tree branches.
The other way we create patterns is to blend the edges of an image together, effectively fading-out one edge of the image while fading-in the other edge.
More examples of these kinds of repeating patterns can be found at the gallery of repeating patterns and by visiting the web sites listed in the portfolio.
